the little-known Firth of Virginia

As seen on a sign hanging on a cubicle wall behind the marriage license counter in the Arlington County Courthouse:

THE 231th YEAR OF THE COMMONWEALTH

But don't call it a state. No, no! Because THAT would be inaccurate.

    There are four commonweals in the United States. That of Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Massachusetts. I used to know what the difference between a state and commonwealth was, but I don't anymore.

    Oh, but you got my point, right? I know Virginia isn't a state. I also know to change the suffix on a number to make it accurate, when I (once a year) apparently have to type it out and affix the sheet of computer paper to my cubicle wall.
    It just cracks me up when government employees screw stuff up in public ways. Perhaps it shouldn't surprise me, though.
